Are there charges on checked bags for international flight, via Newark airport (Continental Airlines)

Are there charges on checked bags for international flight, via Newark airport (Continental Airlines)?
I'm flying from Toronto to Beijing, but change flight at Newark Airport. The Continental airlines said there are no charges on international (Asia) flight. But What about the flight from Toronto to Newark?? I am confused about the charges right now. Please help.

no cause you're luggage will be checked to Beijing you won't need to recheck-it in newark, you're only transiting there.(there are no charges on international flights, you won't pay any charges cause asia is you're finale destination that's what they meant)

I frequently fly El Paso to London via Houston with Continental. Although my El Paso - Houston flight is a domestic, my trip is El Paso to London so the whole trip is counted as International. You needn't worry about having to re-check your baggage anyway because you're International to International (although the baggage limits are different, as I said, CO look at it on each journey as opposed to separate flight)
