Demand and supply. Boeing 747-400 carries more passengers. Boeing 777 is more fuel efficient and travel farther but it is much smaller, less cargo space and carry less passengers than 747. Lufthansa is next in line (after Singapore Airlines) to fly Airbus A380 Super Jumbo Jet. Until than 747-400 is still a good high capacity model. Lufthansa also order future model Boeing 747-8, which is bigger than 747-400 but smaller than A380. Boeing arguement is A380 is too big and more expansive to operate. Boeing 787 (Dreamliner) is expected to launch end of 2009. It will provide another alternative for long range routes; because it carries more passengers than 777. But I don't think Lufhansa order any. The first you will see is Northwest Airlines, if everything goes smoothly.
