Going through Customs for an Intl. Flight at NEWARK? IS THIS POSSIBLE?
I am going abroad to florence in the spring and looking to book a flight from ROCHESTER NY to PISA. The Flight Itinerary is: Rochester (ROC) Depart 4:09 pm to Newark (EWR) Arrive 5:29 pm Continental Depart 6:50 pm Terminal B to London (LHR) BRITISH AIRWAYS. My question is: I arrive in Newark and have 1.5 hrs to get to Terminal B and also go through customs to which I understand. Is this enough time? Has anyone ever done this flight, and what happens to my bags at Newark, do I have to retrieve them? hey....Rochester and Newark are in the same country, even if one is in NY and one is in NJ....you do not go through customs! If you have one ticket, you check your bags thru in ROC and pick them up in PSA. The same goes for your JFK question

When you depart Rochester, your bags will be checked all the way through to Pisa. You will go through customs and security in Rochester with your bags. You will not need to re-check in in Newark, or go through security again, and your bags will be checked all the way through to your destination in Rochester. HOWEVER, when you return from London to Newark, you will have to go through customs in Newark, as that is your point of entry into the United States. You will need to pick up your bags, go through customs, and re-check in (as well as go through security). The 1.5 hour layover is standard for Continental in Newark, that airline pretty much runs Newark International. In some cases they will hold your plane, if a significant number of travelers are joining you for your trip to Rochester. I have had a lot of travelers miss their connections, but easily jump on the next plane out to their destination. Just make sure you arrive in Newark early (before noon) so that you are garunteed to have another flight to Rochester should you miss your original, and won't have to stay overnight. Enjoy your study abroad!
